Navigate your canal barge on the peaceful Havel Canal and descend on the fortified city of Templin. This boating holiday itinerary gives a real insight into the history of the area – explore it at your own pace and enjoy relaxing amidst quiet nature that is perfect for a swim or some fishing in the clear waters of the lakes.
Located in the heart of the Ruppiner area and at the crossroads between Mecklenburg and its numerous lakes and Brandenburg in the direction of Berlin, our Nicols base in Fürstenberg is ideally located for exploring the wilderness of this region by canal boat.
Fürstenberg: impressive lakes, a castle and a history of porcelain manufacture
The historic city of Fürstenberg is a great place for a boating holiday base – not only is it crossed by the Havel River but it is also surrounded by the lakes of Röblinsee and Schwedtsee. There are lots of places of interest in Fürstenberg so we recommend spending some time here before setting sail (or at the end of your boating holiday). A visit to the castle introduces the city’s porcelain manufacturing history via the ‘Porzellan Museum’.
Himmelpfort: a stopover in Santa's country
This tiny village of just 500 inhabitants is well known throughout Germany as being the place of residence for Santa Claus! You and your canal boat crew should look out for the small post office which is said to receive nearly 300,000 letters from children around the world every year. Another site to visit is the ruins of an old abbey which is set on a promontory between the four lakes of Stolpsee, Sidowsee, Haussee and Moderfitzsee. Foodies should also try the local speciality of smoked fish.
Your boating holiday is coming to an end. It is time to begin the return leg back to the Nicols base at Fürstenberg.
We fell in love with these waterways Hiring a canal boat and exploring this region was delightful. The Havel River is very calm and ideal for newbies like us who had no previous navigation experience! We really were seduced by the beauty of the lakes of Uckermark and would love to one day return and see more.
