Description of
the boating holiday

Important information: part of the canal from Nantes to Brest (between the city of Redon and the junction with the Erdre) is closed to navigation from autumn 2022 until spring 2024.
Therefore, our base in Sucé sur Erdre will be closed for the entire 2023 season.
One-way trips from Glénac to Sucé sur Erdre will not be possible during this period.

Hire a canal boat in Brittany

This one week boating holiday takes you and your crew on the River Erdre, the Canal de Nantes à Brest and the River Vilaine. Enjoy a week of cruising in the heart of Brittany.

Departure base

No previous boating experience is needed to hire a self-drive canal boat from the Nicols base at Sucé sur Erdre, which is located about 15km north of Nantes. This boating holiday itinerary to Messac takes an average of 43 hours, so about six to seven hours per day cruising time. This means it is an itinerary for those who love life at the helm of their stylish Nicols canal boat.

Places to see and things to do

Sucé-sur-Erdre: The Erdre castles – 17 castles in just 15kms

Quiheix:
"Plaine de Mazerolles" a wildlife swamp on the Erdre

Aire de Bout de Bois:
mooring point with swimming area, fishing

Blain:
La Groulais Castle, Various footpaths from the port for walks

Guenrouët:
Kerisac cider factory, Swimming pool with slides, mini-golf

Redon:
historic town with pedestrian streets, Museum of the west shipping industry, guided tour of the abbey or of the monastery of the Calvairiennes

Guipry/Messac:
mills in Guirpy, “Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Port” chapel, motor museum in Lohéac (7km away)

After cruising as far as Messac it is time to think about the return leg of your journey. Look out again for the favourite places you found so far, or maybe stop off at some new ones as you cruise back to the starting base at Sucé sur Erdre.

The freedom of a boating holiday
This was our third boating holiday in Brittany and although the route is quite long at 250km we didn’t mind as we love being in charge of our own canal boat. With many of the locks on the Canal de Nantes à Brest it meant we could travel at our own pace going where we want, when we want.
