Description of
the boating holiday

Boating holidays in the Camargue from our base at Bellegarde

If you’ve a few days to get away then we recommend this short break boating holiday from our base at Bellegarde. Your canal boat will take you between marshes and large open lakes, all the time being close to the sunny beaches of the Mediterranean. This route on the Canal du Rhône à Sète is ideal for beginners - there are no locks and no previous boating experience or licence is required to hire a Nicols canal boat.

Departure base

From the Nicols base at Bellegarde you can travel by canal boat the entire length of the Canal du Rhône à Sète, meandering through the heart of the beautiful Camargue and alongside the sun-drenched beaches of the Mediterranean.

Places to see and things to do

Bellegarde: makers of Clairette de Bellegarde white wine, Broussan chapel, Oil mill, Roman aqueduct

Saint Gilles:
The abbey (a UNESCO site), Museum of the Romanesque House

Franquevaux:
Horse-drawn carriage rides in the heart of Camargue, meet manadiers (wild horse herders) and learn about their work

Gallician:
vineyards and wine cellars, Scamander Nature Reserve, raised trail for walks across the marshes

Aigues-Mortes:
walk around the 13th century ramparts and five towers, Museum of history and archaeology, Church of Notre-Dame

Palavas les Flots:
Albert Dubout comedy museum, steam train museum, Festivals in the summer, famous Languedoc games such as boat-jousting, casino

After cruising as far as Palavas-les-Flots on the Canal du Rhône à Sète it is time to think about the return leg of your journey. Look out again for the favourite places you found so far, or maybe stop off at some new ones as you cruise back to the starting base at Bellegarde.

A fantastic family break
Our boating holiday from Bellegarde was great as it combined quality family time together on the calm waters of the Canal du Rhône à Sète with the fun of a beach holiday and swimming in the Mediterranean sea at Palavas-les-Flots. We loved it, the kids loved it!
