Sailing along the River Charente in western France gave Mark Sampson a gentle introduction to leisure crusing.

I had seen the boats on the River Lot and thought it looked fun, but never imagine myself messing about on the Charente. To my shame, i hadn't even realised that the Charente and Charente-Maritime took their names, as most départements do, from an eponymous river.

Our boating holidays were included in a ‘three of the best’ roundup feature by France Magazine. They chose a short-break in the sunny south of France from the Nicols base at Le Somail on the Canal du Midi.
