Description of
the boating holiday

From the waterways of Alsace-Lorraine, history reveals itself

Exploring Alsace and Lorraine by water for two weeks you will discover the true diversity of the region. From lush landscapes to cities with in history, like Nancy, Toul or Saverne.  And don’t forget the charming villages along the way such as Lutzelbourg and Niderviller.

Departure base

Located at the foot of the Regional Natural Park of the Northern Vosges which is classified as a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, the marina of Saverne is an excellent starting point for a boating holiday.  From here you can discover a region rich in gastronomy, culture, heritage and nature.

Places to see and things to do

Saverne: Rohan castle (museum), Haut-Barr castle, Saverne‘ s old town, Centre Nautique l’Océanide – waterpark

Lutzelbourg: Wurm crystal factory, castle, panoramic views of the valley, children’s playground

Arzviller: Boat lift, engine room, Houseboat museum, "Fusion Libre" crystal factory, alpine luge coaster ride

Niderviller: Tunnels (475m & 2306m), Pottery museum and factory shop, Marc Chagall stained glass at the Chapelle des Cordeliers, Sarrebourg (6km from Niderviller):

Réchicourt: Remarkable lock, 16m high

Einville au Jard: Luneville castle (7.5km)

St Nicolas de port: Basilica of Saint Nicholas, a stork enclosure, Museum of film and photography, French museum of brasserie (brewing)

Nancy: Place Stanislas, Palace of the “Dukes”, Museum of Lorraine, Park of “the tree nursery” (mini golf), Museum of modern and contemporary arts

Liverdun: Medieval gateway, ancient fortifications, 12th century church, The fountain square and arcades

Toul: St. Etienne's cathedral, old town and Vauban fortifications, museum of art and history

Richardménil: Fleville castle

Richardménil is the half-way point of your boating holiday in Alsace-Lorraine.  Turn around here and head back to the starting base at Saverne. You can stop off at your favourite place on the return leg or, perhaps, make some new discoveries.

Leisurely exploration
Two weeks on this holiday gave us time to explore Alsace-Lorraine at our own pace. Arriving in the heart of Nancy at night with all the lights was one of the most memorable parts of this river cruise!
